Google Launches Universal Work Agent Gemini Agent, Running Gemini and Anthropic's Claude
Google Cloud announced the "Gemini agent" at its Gemini at Work 2026 event on October 8 (ET): a universal agent for work. CEO Thomas Kurian said in his keynote that work now starts in a single prompt box — the agent holds an organization's business context, plans the work, uses skills and tools, connects to business systems, and returns finished work inside documents, inboxes and developer environments. It lives directly inside Workspace — Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat, Calendar — and also reaches Microsoft 365 and Slack. Reuters covered the launch the same day.

What Happened
It happened at the Gemini at Work 2026 event on October 8. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said in his keynote (published in full on the Google Cloud blog) that work now starts in a prompt box. The "Gemini agent" is defined as "a universal agent for work" — it holds a company's business context, plans tasks on its own, calls skills and tools, connects to customers' business systems, and delivers finished work back to documents, inboxes and developer environments. It is embedded in Workspace: Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar, plus Microsoft 365 and Slack; entry points span web, iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and the command line. One prompt box covers knowledge work, Q&A, content creation, images and media, and writing and running code.
It isn't limited to Google's own models — the company says the agent "chooses the best model for the job," launching on Google's own Gemini and Anthropic's Claude, with more models to come. Reuters singled that out in its same-day coverage. The other piece is "coworker agents": users can create a persistent digital colleague with its own Workspace identity — its own email address, calendar, Drive storage, company-directory seat; team members can @ it in Google Chat to assign work. Google says it runs multi-day tasks, handles parallel assignments, responds to scheduled or event triggers, and assembles temporary squads of specialized sub-agents for complex work. Around it sit cost controls (multi-model orchestration, Smart Routing, real-time spend caps) and enterprise governance (identity and policy management, authorization and permission controls, secure sandboxing, network gateways). Industry editions land first for financial services and legal (preview); government, healthcare and retail follow. In September, OpenAI launched its always-on agent dots and Meta launched its personal agent Muse.
Key Facts
- Multi-model: Google's flagship work agent launches with Anthropic's Claude on its model list. The official line is "the best model for each job."
- The "coworker" has its own email: A coworker agent carries its own Workspace account, email, calendar, Drive storage and directory identity, can be @-mentioned in Google Chat to assign work, and runs for days on parallel assignments.
- The numbers: Kurian's keynote gave these figures: nearly 500 Google Cloud customers each processed over one trillion tokens in the past year; nearly 80% of Google Cloud customers use its AI products; nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise; Brazil's Bradesco cut document review from one hour to five minutes; Spain's Orange deployed more than 1,000 custom agents; PayPal routes 10 million multi-model requests a week; Shopify blends frontier models for millions of merchants. No pricing was announced.
- Three companies' agents: September: OpenAI's always-on dots, pursuing user goals across apps on its own; Meta's Muse, a personal agent for shopping, travel booking, email and payments. October 8: Google's Gemini agent, aimed at enterprise workflows.
Context
The timeline: October 2025 — Google Cloud launches Gemini Enterprise (its agentic AI platform); early October 2026 — Gemini Gems start migrating to Skills (Workspace customers from Oct 5, done by mid-November); October 8, 2026 — the Gemini at Work 2026 event, where Thomas Kurian launches the Gemini agent. OpenAI's dots, Meta's Muse and Google's Gemini agent launched within three weeks of each other.
Why it matters
Google's flagship work agent launches on both its own Gemini and Anthropic's Claude; "coworker agents" get their own email, calendar and directory identity.
