gFiber, Qualcomm and Gemtek Unveil AI-Native Wi-Fi 8 Gateway With Symmetric 20-Gig and On-Device Agents
gFiber (formerly Google Fiber), Qualcomm, and Taiwan broadband equipment maker Gemtek announced on October 12 a jointly developed AI-native Wi-Fi 8 broadband gateway, demonstrated at the telecom trade show Network X 2026. The device will serve as gFiber's flagship symmetric 20-gig broadband router, elevating the customer premises equipment from a tucked-away box into a high-compute centerpiece: the household's internet hub and its local platform for agentic AI at the edge, with AI processing directly on the gateway.

What happened
According to the joint release on October 12, the gateway is built on Qualcomm's Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite platform: concurrent quad-band Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn), a dedicated hardware NPU (Qualcomm Hexagon NPU), and a high-performance penta-core CPU, paired with Qualcomm's edge AI software framework, enabling agentic AI and intelligent services to run directly on the gateway for more responsive experiences, less cloud reliance, and home-network data staying local.
Demonstrations at Network X include intent-based parental controls — a natural-language voice command such as ‘pause social media on my kids’ devices until 7 PM’ triggers the corresponding network action directly on the gateway; frictionless guest access via voice-initiated QR codes on the router's front-facing touchscreen; voice-controlled smart-home integration; and real-time network health diagnostics.
Through our collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies and Gemtek, we’re transforming the router into an intelligent service platform.

Key facts
- Roles: gFiber (formerly Google Fiber) brings the broadband service and product definition; Qualcomm supplies the Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite platform and edge AI software framework; Gemtek handles product design, RF engineering, system integration, and manufacturing.
- Hardware: concurrent quad-band Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn), Qualcomm Hexagon NPU, penta-core CPU; supports symmetric 20-gig broadband today, with the architecture intended to support future 50-gig services.
- Rollout: existing gFiber 20-gig customers will be the first upgraded to the new gateway; gFiber has completed a live-network 50G PON trial in Kansas City (Nokia technology) and plans a residential 50G trial with the new gateway by spring 2027.
Why it matters
A production product putting an NPU and an agentic framework into a carrier gateway at once, turning the router from a networking box into a household's local AI compute entry point.
