GitHub Copilot to Remove Three Flagship Models on November 16: Claude Opus 4.8/5 and GPT-5.6 Terra Retired

GitHub announced in its official changelog on October 15 that Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 5, and GPT-5.6 Terra will be removed from all Copilot experiences on November 16, 2026, with official replacements named for each.

What happened

In an official changelog entry published October 15 (US Eastern), GitHub said Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 5, and GPT-5.6 Terra will be removed from all Copilot experiences on November 16, 2026, covering Chat, inline editing, ask/agent mode, and code completion. The notice names replacements: Opus users move to Claude Opus 5.5, Terra users to GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Luna.

The notice also says annual individual subscribers may keep access to Claude Opus 4.8. According to dev.to's citation of Anthropic's model retirement policy, Opus 5 remains Active on Anthropic's own API (not scheduled for retirement before July 24, 2027) — what closes on November 16 is only the Copilot channel; the model itself is not being discontinued.
