What happened
According to data Vercel published Thursday, Jev was used by 35% of paid teams within two weeks of release, with nearly double the reach of the second most popular model, Sonnet 5.5. Vercel says it is the fastest adoption any model has ever seen in its first two weeks on its AI gateway — and a major accomplishment for Jev's creator, TypeSafe AI.
Jev launched in limited release on September 15 as a lightweight model designed for “choosing between a few predetermined outputs”: limiting outputs lets it run cheaper and faster than general models like Sonnet, making it ideal for classifying large quantities of data. The new approach has attracted significant buzz since release, inspiring competing offerings from OpenAI and Amazon among others — but until now there had been little hard data to back up the good vibes.
The data comes from Vercel's AI gateway — a unified API service similar to OpenRouter — a necessarily limited view, particularly at risk of undercounting major labs like OpenAI and Anthropic that offer their own APIs. Vercel was itself an early adopter of Jev, using it to replace GPT-6 Luna for classifying harmful commands. The report also shows open-source models now account for more than 70% of tokens processed through the gateway and nearly 25% of total spend, while spending on frontier labs has grown tenfold.
Key facts
- 35% coverage: Used by 35% of paid teams within two weeks of launch, nearly double Sonnet 5.5's reach
- Decision model: Chooses among predetermined outputs instead of generating text — cheaper and faster
- Limited release Sept 15: Built by TypeSafe AI; OpenAI and Amazon have since launched competing offerings
- Vercel's own use: Replaced GPT-6 Luna with Jev for classifying harmful commands
- Open-source share: Open-source models account for 70%+ of gateway tokens and nearly 25% of spend; frontier-lab spending grew tenfold
Why it matters
Jev proved within two weeks that decision models which “choose without writing” have real scaled demand, while open-source models captured over 70% of gateway token volume — the inference market is shifting from “bigger is better” to “good enough and cheap.”
